Dear Port of Bellingham Commissioners,

I'm writing to urge you to reconsider spending nearly half a million dollars on a 100+ stall asphalt parking lot on the waterfront.

This project contradicts the Port's 2023 Climate Action Strategy and Waterfront District Sub-Area Plan, which call for a 90% emissions reduction by 2030, safer bicycle and pedestrian routes, and reduced parking as “a key strategy in creating pedestrian-oriented development” and decreasing “the total amount of impervious surfaces [to] lessen the impacts of stormwater runoff.”

But it’s not just bad planning, it’s also bad spending. A $450,000 investment could fund hundreds of much-needed bike parking spaces, better pedestrian wayfinding, improved connections between the waterfront and downtown Bellingham, and other amenities that make arriving without a car actually inviting. New infrastructure investments on the waterfront should complement our community’s recent investment in bike lanes and WTA bus service, not degrade them.

Pouring more asphalt on land designated for permanent mixed-use development means entrenching car dependency at exactly the wrong moment. Please pause this contract, evaluate multimodal alternatives, and commit to funding for better non-motorized access. Sincerely,[name][neighborhood]
