Dear Executive Sidhu, County Councilmembers and Staff, I am deeply disappointed in the proposed Active Transportation Network and Multimodal Levels of Service updates developed by Transpo Group as presented at the March 12 meeting of the Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The draft plan prioritizes single occupancy vehicle travel throughout Whatcom County, excludes important trail connections, ignores important new connections, and identifies high stress segments as "complete."The County should instead be planning SAFE active transportation connections between communities that people WANT TO USE. This includes the Bay to Baker, Nooksack Loop and Coast Millennium trail corridors and on-road routes that are physically protected or separated from fast-moving traffic. The plan does neither of these things.Separated paths and a safe on-road bike network should be funded by TIP dollars. Council, the Executive, and staff MUST prioritize this effort. TRAILS ARE TRANSPORTATION. People who walk and bike deserve a safe, comfortable network on which to travel throughout Whatcom County.
